Website tip of the day

How clear is your value proposition?

Many statistics packages show you the most comment paths through your website. Open your website in a new browser and follow one of these paths. Start on the page the visitor was on just before they reached your site and try to think what may have made them click on the link, what were they expecting to see once they got to your site?

Once on your site, follow the path, clicking on the sames links as your visitors. Is your visitor likely to get a good understanding of your unique value proposition from this visit? If not, make sure you lay your pages out with more specific headlines and calls to action.

Check your title tags

Every page has a title tag, you can see the title tag for each page by looking at the tab of your browser. On this page, it will say 'Website tip of the day'.

The title tag is important to search engines, so make sure yours accurately reflects each page. Avoid a generic title tag or just using your business name, instead try to use important keywords from the page. If you have registered your website with google, you will be able to see if there are any problems with your title tags.

If you have the Webwam Webmanager, change the title tag by opening your page, clicking on file->file details, the click the search optimisation tab. Enter the title in the first box, click apply, then click save.

Upload video to youtube

If you want to put video on your site, create a youtube video account and upload it. Click to edit the video and set a meaningful name, description and keyword tags. On your own account, write a short description of your business in the bio and put a link to your website.

If you have a Webmanager account and you want to put the video on your page, copy the embed code next to your video on youtube. You can customise the video by clicking the customise link to the right of the code. Select colour and whether to show related videos.

Open your page in the Webmanager. Click on a new code element and click properties. In the properties menu, click the code button and paste the youtube coding into the box. Click apply and resize the element to a width of 425px and height of 344px. Save the page and your video will now show.

Now you can have videos on your page that don't use your hosting, gives visitors another way to find your site, and can help to improve your search optimisation.
